The 6th Edition of the SERL Observatory Dataset and the 2nd Edition of the SERL statistical dataset are now available.

Following the release of the SERL Stats Report (Vol II) in May we are pleased to announce the availability of a new edition of our SERL Observatory Dataset and the accompanying – and more easily accessible – SERL statistical dataset.

What’s in the datasets and how to access

The SERL Statistical Dataset is an aggregated but granular statistical dataset that provides high-quality, high-resolution data (over 2 million rows) that can be utilised for many research purposes without the restrictions that come with accessing the Controlled (Secure Access) Observatory dataset.

The dataset consists of aggregated summaries of the (imported, exported and net) electricity and gas consumption data with aggregated linked contextual data, optionally grouped by three levels of contextual data. Contextual data groupings are either categorical variables (e.g. region, EPC rating) or banded continuous variables (e.g. ranges of daily external temperature, ranges of floor areas). For full details see the data documentation here

The Statistical Dataset is easily accessible to registered UK Data Service (UKDS) users via a simple end user license. Simply register and create a UKDS account if you don’t already have one. Then add the Stats dataset to your account and sign the End User License

Access to the 6th Edition of the SERL Observatory data is provided via a secure lab environment and is restricted to accredited researchers working on approved projects. This aligns with the 5 Safes protocols used by the UK Data Service (UKDS) for all access to any controlled data via a secure lab. This dataset contains the full pseudo-anonymised data from the SERL cohort of 13,000 homes collected since 2019. It includes daily and half-hourly energy (electricity and gas) consumption data; additional smart meter technical data; participants survey; Energy Performance Certificate (EPC); weather data and tariff data (full details here)

Widening access to SERL

We’re aware that accessing the full controlled SERL dataset is an onerous – but necessary – procedure. So we are very pleased to be able to provide resources like the Statistical Dataset and Stats Reports which are more easily accessible outputs from the Smart Energy Research Lab data. Going forward, we are prioritising ways of making SERL data more easily accessible in different formats to get the most value out of the public investment in the project.
