We are delighted to announce that the first Statistical Report on our Observatory Dataset is now available for download.

What’s in the report?

Entitled ‘Smart Energy Research Lab: Energy use in GB domestic buildings 2021. Variation in annual, seasonal, and diurnal gas and electricity use with weather, building and occupant characteristics. (SERL Statistical Reports: Volume 1)’ the report summarises gas and electricity energy use in 2021 for the Smart Energy Research Lab (SERL) Observatory panel, which consists of approximately 13,000 homes that are broadly representative of the GB population in terms of region and IMD quintile.

Unique data

The data is unique in terms of demonstrating how residential energy use in GB varies over time (monthly over the year and half-hourly over the course of the day), with occupant characteristics (number of occupants, tenure), property characteristics (age, size, form, and Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)), by type of heating system, presence of solar panels and electric vehicles, and by weather, region and Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD).

SERL milestone

Intended to be the first in a regular series of reports, analyses and aggregated statistics using SERL Observatory data, we expect this report will be of interest to academics, government, NGOs and industry.

Our thanks go to everyone who has contributed to the development and steering of SERL in helping us reach this milestone, in particular the 13,000 households who gave consent for us to access their smart meter data, and UKRI/EPSRC for funding the work. The statistical datasets accompanying the report will be made available shortly.
