The Smart Energy Research Lab is committed to maintaining the highest standards of data governance and is working with relevant experts to establish best practice that facilitates innovation in smart energy research while maintaining the data privacy of SERL participants.
Robust data governance is absolutely fundamental to the development and operation of the SERL research portal and we have developed rigorous protocols covering three perspectives:
- Inbound governance – Data is collected by SERL with the informed consent of GB households who have agreed to provide their smart meter data for research purposes. SERL operates in full compliance with the Smart Energy Code (SEC) and GDPR.
- Outbound governance – SERL’s independent Data Governance Board ensures that only accredited researchers working on approved projects can gain access to appropriate data using established “5 Safes” protocols.
- Endogenous governance – SERL’s internal data management processes are designed to ensure that data is managed in compliance with inbound and outbound governance protocols.
